New Parents Support Group at Carbon Market

RESTORE Children and Family Services, opens its second batch of parents’ support group in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City last February 17, 2024, in collaboration with Carbon Police Station (Police Station 5), Megawide Construction Corporation and the Community Bible Study International. This support group caters to parents who are working and living in Carbon Market. A total of twenty-five attendees joined the weekly sessions held at Police Station 5, located within the Interim Bldg. of Carbon Market. There will be a total of ten sessions for this group.

“Our hope is that these parents will have a shift of perspective on parenting, as being more than just providing for food, but also meeting the emotional, spiritual and developmental needs of their children. Our goal is to develop a healthy communication between the parent-and-child relationships to nurture a safe and calm environment. They will also learn coping skills in handling life’s difficult experiences” says Denise Mel, co-facilitator of the group and the Clinical Program Manager of Restore.

The Parents’ Support Group is one of the therapeutic services of Restore Children and Family Services that aims to psychoeducate and process the struggles of parents who have their personal traumatic experiences. These traumas, if left unprocessed, often lead to difficulty in dealing with their daily stressors effectively.  This could result to more children being at risk to abusive behaviors and neglect. To stop this cycle, we started this parent-support group to address the struggles of the parents first in the hope of reducing the risk of abuse and violence within their own homes.
